A Long Guide to a Short Life

Type of Work: Altered Book, Mixed Media
Fall 2015

An altered book is a type of mixed media art that employs cutting, tearing, gluing, folding, rebinding, or other artistic methods to change the appearance and meaning of an existing book.

As a commentary on self-help books and at-home medicine, I took a copy of David B. Agus, MD’s book A Short Guide to a Long Life and created A Long Guide to a Short Life. I sketched upon, edited, and reversed each of Dr. Agus’ medical tips, prescribing exactly the opposite of his recommendations. I also rebound the book with new end papers and sanded the cover of the original to wear away the foil stamping on the spire. Behold, the snarky and irreverent creation!
